Nightlife Report style guide

From Nightlife Report Wiki
House style
One system across the blog, the forum, the front page and this wiki. Simple, flat, lots of white space.

Masthead

The masthead is always NIGHTLIFE REPORT: capitals, Playfair Display, wide letter-spacing, black on white. Never redraw it, stretch it, outline it or set it in another colour.

Colour

Swatch Name Hex RGB Use
Nightlife Red #EB3F43 235 63 67 Primary. Links, eyebrows, rules, the owl's eyes. On white only.
Black #000000 0 0 0 Text, heavy rules, dark bands.
Dark Gray #545659 84 86 89 Meta, captions, secondary text.
Light Gray #A6A6A8 166 166 168 Hairline rules, disabled states, large meta only.
White #FFFFFF 255 255 255 The page.
  • Red never sits on black or on light gray. On a black band, links and eyebrows turn white.
  • Lemon #D6D972, pink #F5BAC5 and blue #24298F are for charts and colour-coding only, never for type, the masthead or page chrome.
  • No other colours, not even for holidays.
  • No gradients, drop shadows, glows or rounded "card" corners. Charts are flat too.

Type

  • Headlines: Playfair Display. ExtraBold (800) for page titles and the front page, Semibold (600) for section heads.
  • Body: Inter Regular (400) at 17px, line-height 1.65, about 68 characters per line. Inter Light (300) for the standfirst only.
  • Eyebrows and labels: Inter Semibold, capitals, letter-spaced, red. One or two words: Breaking, Field notes, Tips.
  • Type colour is red, black, white, dark gray or light gray. Nothing else.
  • Quotes are left-aligned with a red rule on the left. The attribution sits on the right in small gray Inter.

Layout

  • Generous margins (up to 64px on large screens) and big gaps between sections.
  • Rules instead of boxes: a 2px black rule opens a section, 1px gray hairlines separate rows.
  • Numbered sub-heads use an em dash: 01—The opening, 02—The finale. Figures: F.01—Caption.

Writing

  • Dated, sourced, corrected in public. Every factual page carries its sources and the date it was last checked.
  • Name public figures in their public role. Do not name private people, minors or anyone who asked not to be named.
  • Corrections go at the foot of the page with the date and go into Category:Corrections.

The owl

The owl mark appears beside the tips line in every footer. It is drawn in black lines with red eyes, on white. Don't add colour, shadows or a background shape.
